Digital studio Reel FX, (Santa Monica/Dallas) excises the dead with their post-production work on a stylish and creepy new 16-minute short film, “Chores,” which recently premiered at the Dallas International Film Festival. The film was also screened at the Indie Spirit Film Festival (Colorado Springs) and will travel to Japan for the upcoming Short Shorts Film Festival (Tokyo). Written and directed by Terence Bernardo and edited by Reel FX’s Quan Tran, Reel FX handled the edit, online and final mix. The film features a solitary farmer who is visited by the supernatural.
“Terence is a good friend and we’ve been talking about doing a film together for a long time,” Tran says. “Despite having a relatively short turnaround time for post, no punches were thrown and honestly it was all a huge excuse to get together to eat a ton of food.”
“The stark contrast between day and night in the countryside played a large role in what inspired me to tell the story,” Bernardo says. “I found the imagery compelling and the tale flowed from there. I also wanted to give myself an excuse to write new music, since that’s my day job. Admittedly, it was an elaborate excuse.”
“Chores” is a tale of one man’s tragic obsession. On a remote and isolated farm a man goes about his daily chores, content and alone. This solitary existence at first appears to be beautiful and idyllic, but quickly takes an ominous turn when he realizes that something or someone is watching him. As darkness falls an uninvited visitor circles closer, and he is forced to relive a traumatic event from his past. Unable to bury his pain, there is nothing he can do to escape his daily chores.
