An innovative new service aimed at solving the workflow problems in video production is launching in Chicago under the auspices of Global Video.VideoDailies promises an “in by 6:00 p.m., out by 9:00 a.m.” overnight service to digitize any and all HD and standard definition video for use the next day on Avid, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere computer editing systems.
“And the best part,” says VideoDailies general manager Scott Jacobs, “is that you can place your order online, specifying all the details your editor wants to see, then track your order online to see it’s been received, your tapes are in process and/or your job is completed.”
“Shoot, sleep, edit” is the advertising slogan for VideoDailies. To reassure clients that their jobs are being handled properly, Global Video has set up a sophisticated online website, videodailies.tv, where clients can monitor every detail of their job.
Jacobs, the founder of IPA (Independent Programming Associates) and a 25-year veteran in the post-production industry, says the idea for VideoDailies came out of his experience in the field.
“It used to be pretty simple. You shoot Betacam or Digital-Beta. The editor digitizes it into his Avid. Then he makes a rough cut and you spit out a list for an online conform,” he says. “But the array of options available now in HD has created a wide swath of confusion. Are you shooting 1080i or 1080p, 720p/24 or 25 or 30, HDV, P2 or Sony’s new XDCAM? At what audio frame rate? 24 or 23.976? And which Avid are you going into? Or are you going to Final Cut? Or Adobe Premiere? It’s never been harder to be a responsible producer.”
The aim of VideoDailies is to bridge the gap between the formats cinematographers want to shoot and the decisions editors must make when they ingest that material into their editing systems.
“We’re trying to solve three problems at the same time – and save everyone money,” Jacobs says. “The first problem is the communication gap. How many times do shooters send over their tapes to the editing house at the end of the day thinking that the editor knows how to deal with them? And how often does the editor come in the next morning wondering what to do with these things? And once everyone has gotten all the right information, how available are the shared HD decks to digitize things as everyone wants them? It’s a great big waste of time and money.”
VideoDailies is launching with eight Chicago city and suburban “Drop-off Centers” and a promise to pick-up tapes by messenger from any location within the Chicago area – if the order has been placed via the Internet-o Facilities that have committed to serve as drop-off centers include Media Process Group, Post Effects, Resolution Digital Studios, Roscor, and Zacuto Rentals. Drop-off deadlines vary based on each facilities normal business hours, but Global Video accepts tapes until 9:00 p.m. on weekdays.
“The key to our success is having people get comfortable using our online order form,” Jacobs says. “It’s a little daunting at first having to fill out all the billing and shipping information on your first order. But on your second order, all that info can be automatically filled-in. So all you need to tell us is how many reels you are sending over, how it was shot, and how you want it digitized. People who try it once will come to rely on it.”
